A group of organizations are sponsoring a professional development program for educators in the 2008-2009 school year focused on "Teaching Inquiry Through Primary Sources." Through these web-based and face-to-face professional development opportunities, Oklahoma educators will learn how to:
- Enhance classroom instruction with digitized, original historical documents.
- Build inquiry-based lessons using the online collections of the Library of Congress and libraries, museums, and archives across Oklahoma.
Project collaborators include:
- The Library of Congress
- The Oklahoma State Department of Education - Library Media/iTV Division
- The Oklahoma Department of Libraries
- The Oklahoma Heritage Association
A printable PDF flyer/brochure about these professional development opportunities is available.
- To provide Oklahoma school library media specialists and other educators professional development opportunities.
- To enhance instructional practices for inquiry-based student learning using primary sources in support of state standards.
- To build the foundation for a program that can be delivered by and for Oklahoma educators.
Library of Congress trainers will facilitate an intensive institute over four days in July. The workshop will be held in the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Applications will be taken from participants who have participated in PRIOR web-based training. (That training is a prerequisite for those attending the institute.) By the end of the summer institute, participants will be familiar with the digitized primary sources of the Library of Congress, as well as local Oklahoma resources, and understand their value in instruction. Participants will create inquiry-based lessons supporting Oklahoma's Priority Academic Student Standards (PASS.)
Registration is now closed for the summer training.
